Garden Alley (until 1914) |
The segment of this alley between 42nd Street and 44th Street appears, unlabeled, in R. E. McGowin's 1852 map of Pittsburgh; the surrounding lots are labeled "Rev. R. Lee" and "Dr. Robinson."[1]
The alley appears in a plan of lots by Samuel H. Keller recorded in 1864 and another plan by Henry Wilhelm and Paul Siebert recorded in 1867, though neither of these plans gave it a name.[2][3] It was named Garden Alley in John G. Brown's plan of lots, laid out in 1867.[4] This name also appears in James S. Devlin's plan, recorded in 1877.[5]
An ordinance authorizing the grading of Garden Alley was passed by City Councils in 1868.[6] The name Garden Alley was officially established by a city ordinance in 1881.[7]
Garden Alley became Garden Way in 1914, when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[8]
