Friendship Alley (1867–1910)
Fireman Alley (1910–1914)

This alley was laid out in a plan of lots by James Anderson recorded in 1850, though that plan did not give it a name.[1] It was named Friendship Alley by an Allegheny city ordinance in 1867.[2]

In 1910, three years after Allegheny was annexed by Pittsburgh, over 900 streets and alleys were renamed to fix duplicates. Friendship Alley conflicted with Friendship Avenue in the East End, so it was changed to Fireman Alley.[3] It became Fireman Way in 1914, when all alleys in Pittsburgh were changed to ways.[4]

In a 1937 Post-Gazette column, Charles F. Danver humorously paired Fireman Way with Conductor Way in the Lower Hill District,[5] both being job titles of railroad workers.
