Lafferty Avenue was laid out in 1888 by S. L. Boggs.[1] It became part of the Borough of Montooth when that borough was created in 1897.[2] In 1907, Montooth Borough was annexed by Pittsburgh[3] and Lafferty Avenue was officially established as a Pittsburgh street name.[4]
The easternmost part of Lafferty Avenue, between Montooth Street and Gearing Avenue, was laid out as Short Alley in 1874 in Benjamin McLain and Thomas S. Maple's first plan of Beltzhoover.[5] Short Alley was south of and parallel to Short Street, which later became the westernmost part of Freeland Street.
When Beltzhoover Borough was annexed in 1898,[6] a Pittsburgh city ordinance changed the names of many streets to fix duplicates. Short Street was made part of Freeland Street, but Short Alley was not mentioned by this ordinance.[7] However, it seems to have been understood that Short Alley had been renamed Freeland Alley. Another ordinance in 1910 established the names of all thoroughfares in Pittsburgh; it mentioned Freeland Alley in its description of Cleo Street ("Cleo, from Althea to Freeland ay., 18th wd."), but again did not list the alley directly.[8]
Freeland Alley became Freeland Way in 1914, when an ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[9]
In 1915, Freeland Way was widened and made part of Lafferty Avenue.[10]
