This street was laid out as Hickory Alley in the first plan of Beltzhoover by Benjamin McLain and Thomas S. Maple, recorded in 1874.[1] Beltzhoover was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1898,[2] and a city ordinance two months later renamed Hickory Alley to Cleo Alley.[3] Another ordinance in 1910, which established the names of all streets in Pittsburgh, listed it as just "Cleo," thereby making it officially Cleo Street (as all names not otherwise designated were to be streets).[4] Current street signs say "Cleo St."
