Home Street

From Pittsburgh Streets
(Redirected from Forty-Six-and-a-Half Street)
Home Street
Neighborhood Central Lawrenceville
47th Street (ca. 1870)
Origin of name Sequential numbering up the Allegheny River
46½ Street (ca. 1870 – 1873)
Origin of name Its location between 46th Street and 47th Street

This street was laid out in 1870 as part of the subdivision of the Irwin estate.[1][2] The numbering of the streets perpendicular to the Allegheny River had been done only two years earlier,[3][4] and there seems to have been some confusion about how the numbering was to be applied here, for the Irwin estate plan recorded in 1871 labels this street 47th Street (and modern 47th Street 48th Street).[1] Petitions for the grading and opening of the street in 1873 called it "Forty-six-and-a-half, or Home street."[5] It was officially opened as Home Street by a city ordinance later that year.[6]
