Emlin Street

First Alley (until 1896)
Origin of name Sequential numbering north from Ohio Street
Elenora Street (1896–1910)
Emlin Alley (1910)

This street appears as an unlabeled alley in the 1852 map of R. E. McGowin.[1] It was named First Alley by 1867,[2] and it is so labeled in the 1872 Hopkins atlas.[3] The other numbered alleys in the same sequence were Second Alley (now Shawano Street) and Third Alley (now Thropp Street); Second Alley had that name by 1862,[4] which suggests that the other alleys had been numbered by then as well. The streets here were also numbered First, Second, and Third (now Foreland, Suismon, and Tripoli).

In 1896, an Allegheny city ordinance changed the name of First Alley to Elenora Street. This ordinance also mentions the name Finley Alley;[5] it may be that this was the originally proposed new name, which was changed to Elenora Street by an amendment.

Allegheny was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907.[6] In 1910, a Pittsburgh city ordinance renamed over 900 streets and alleys to fix duplicates. Apparently it was felt that the name Elenora was too similar to that of Eleanor Street on the South Side, so it was renamed Emlin Alley.[7] However, the very next ordinance, which officially established the names of all streets in the city, named it Emlin Street.[8]
