Drain Alley

From Pittsburgh Streets
Drain Alley
Neighborhood Homewood West
Fate Never opened; last mentioned in 1910

This former alley ran from Upland Street to Saxon Way west of Murtland Street. Its location and grade were established by two city ordinances in 1907, which named it Drain Alley:[1][2] it occupied lot no. 322 in the Kedron plan of lots, laid out in 1898.[3] It was listed in a 1910 ordinance that established the names of all thoroughfares in Pittsburgh.[4] After that, it is never mentioned again in the Municipal Record.

It does not appear on any maps of which I am aware. In the 1910 Hopkins atlas, it is just another lot;[5] the 1911 edition says that the lot was owned by A. Vacca.[6] The 1924 edition shows a building built on the lot, so it must not have been in use as an alley.[7] The alley seems never to have been officially opened, so there was no need to officially vacate it; it was just forgotten.
