Chesbro Street
Neighborhood North Shore
Origin of name Maybe Jack Chesbro
Cherry Street (until 1910)
Origin of name Cherry tree

This street was laid out as Cherry Street in 1836 in the plan of lots of G. E. Warner, Jacob Painter, and F. Lorenz. The streets in this plan perpendicular to the Allegheny River were named after trees: the others were Walnut Street (today Warfield Street), Chestnut Street, Sycamore Street (today Heinz Street), and Pine Street (later Pindam Street).[1]

Allegheny City was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907,[2] and in 1910 over 900 streets were renamed to fix duplicates. Cherry Street conflicted with Cherry Alley downtown (today Cherry Way), so it was renamed Chesbro Street.[3]

A 1909 article in the Pittsburgh Post, remarking on some of the new street names that had been proposed, associated the name Chesbro with "the former Pirate twirler,"[4] that is, Jack Chesbro (1874–1931), who pitched for the Pirates from 1899 to 1902.
