This alley was laid out in 1890 in the South View Place plan. It was named Centre Way between Laughlin Avenue and Phillips Avenue (today Meyers Street), and Centerway Avenue between Phillips Avenue and East Avenue (today Meredith Street).[1]
In 1905, a Carrick borough ordinance approved an official "draft or plan" of the borough and adopted all the street names shown on that map.[2] This map renamed the whole length of this alley Holly Way.[3]
When the Borough of Carrick was annexed to Pittsburgh in 1927,[4] the name of this alley conflicted with Holly Way in Lawrenceville, so it was changed to Highnote Way.[5]
In a 1937 column in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Charles F. Danver humorously paired Highnote Way with Caruso Way in Sheraden.[6]
