Cato Street is named for "Young Cato," i.e., Marcus Porcius Cato, a character in Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar. Other streets in South Oakland named after Shakespearean characters include Hamlet Street, Juliet Street, Ophelia Street, and Romeo Street.[1]
