The original name of 23rd Street was Carroll Street. George T. Fleming says this street was named for Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737–1832), a signer of the Declaration of Independence.[1]
In 1868, Pittsburgh's modern sequence of numbered streets was created by renaming all the streets perpendicular to the Allegheny River; Carroll Street became 23rd Street.[2][3][4]
