Beacon Street

From Pittsburgh Streets
Beacon Street
Neighborhood Squirrel Hill South
Origin of name Probably Beacon Hill, Boston

Beacon Street was located by a city ordinance in 1886.[1] It appears in the 1890 Hopkins atlas.[2] The part of Beacon Street between Wightman Street and Schenley Park was officially dedicated in 1890 by members of the Murdoch family, who owned the surrounding land.[3]

According to Helen Wilson, the vice president of the Squirrel Hill Historical Society, Beacon Street is likely named for the neighborhood of Beacon Hill in Boston.[4] Boston has its own major thoroughfare named Beacon Street.
