This alley appears, labeled just "Alley," in G. W. Schmidt's plan of lots, laid out in 1873.[1] It also appears, unlabeled, in the Friendship Grove plan of lots, laid out in 1875.[2]
The name Asterisk Alley was officially established by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1881.[3]
It became Asterisk Way in 1914 when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
In 1937, in a newspaper column about Pittsburgh street names, Charles F. Danver quipped, "The burg is punctuated by an Asterisk way, a Hyphen way, and a Dot way."[5]
