Origin of name | Anna Rose Oberhelman |
This former street ran parallel to and south of Junius Street.[1]
It was laid out as Ann Street in 1873 for Adolph Oberhelman in an addition to his "Village of Johnstown."[2] Most of the streets in Oberhelman's plans of Johnstown were named for members of his family; Ann Street was named for his daughter Anna Rose Oberhelman (ca. 1865 – 1952).[3]
The South Side boroughs, including Union Township (where the Village of Johnstown was located), had been annexed by Pittsburgh the year before.[4] The city already had an Ann Street on the Bluff (today Watson Street), so in 1881 this street in the South Side was renamed Antelope Street.[5] The name was probably just a modification of Ann.
Antelope Street was vacated in 1956.[6]
