Our Alley (ca. 1845 – 1914) |
This alley was laid out as Union Alley in 1833 in a plan of lots by Thomas Scott, Rees Townsend, and Thomas S. Clarke.[1]
The surrounding district was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1845.[2][3] Pittsburgh already had a Union Street (today Graeme Street), so at some point Union Alley was renamed Our Alley. This new name was given no later than 1852, because it appears in R. E. McGowin's map of Pittsburgh from that year.[4]
Our Alley became Our Way in 1914, when a city ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[5]
