Tokio Street (until 1942) | |
Origin of name | Tokyo, Japan |
This street was formerly called Tokio Street (or Tokyo Street). It was renamed Tokay Street in February 1942 amid anti-Japanese sentiment. The change was suggested by Richard O. Fruehauf, a resident of the street, in a letter to the city council on January 6, 1942. "Tokay," the name of a variety of grape, refers to the sweet blue grapes that grew on the surrounding hillsides. The same city ordinance also renamed Japan Way to Joan Way.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]
