Thomas Street (until 1881)

This street appears, unlabeled, in the 1872 Hopkins atlas.[1] It was originally named Thomas Street, but was renamed Telescope Street in 1881 to fix the duplication with Thomas Street (today Thomas Boulevard) in Point Breeze.[2] Bob Regan includes "Telescope" in a list of astronomy-related street names.[3]

When Telescope Street was finally paved in 1941 after 20 years of petitions, its residents declared a holiday and celebrated with music provided by the American Legion drum and bugle corps.[4]
