Sylvan Avenue (until 1911) |
This street appears in the 1882 Hopkins atlas as Sylvan Avenue, along with the street that is modern Sylvan Avenue. The two Sylvan Avenues did not meet but were apparently considered parts of the same thoroughfare.[1] An ordinance from the year before, establishing the names of all streets in the city of Pittsburgh, listed "Sylvan avenue, from Second avenue to Bouquet street," and "Sylvan avenue extension, from Greenfield avenue to Hazelwood avenue,"[2] which suggests that today's Swinburne Street was the earlier of the two. It was renamed Swinburne Street in 1911.[3]
