Hays Street is named for Alexander Hays (1819–1864), colonel of the 63rd Pennsylvania Infantry in the American Civil War. He was a veteran of the Mexican–American War, after which he went to California and then returned to Pittsburgh. He laid out and named some of the streets in the North Side, including Monterey Street and Fremont Street (today Brighton Place). He was killed in the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864, and is buried in Allegheny Cemetery.[1] See also Black Street and Rippey Street.
