Forward Avenue is named for Walter Forward[1][2]:68[3][a] (1786–1852).[7][8][2]:68[3] Forward was a Pittsburgh lawyer, U. S. Representative, fifteenth U. S. Secretary of the Treasury, and presiding judge of the District Court of Allegheny County.[7][8][1][9][3] See also Bates Street.
The portion of Forward Avenue between Murray Avenue and Beechwood Boulevard was part of Pocusset Street from 1896 to 1901.[10][11]
