Origin of name Samuel W. Black

Black Street is named for Samuel W. Black (1816–1862), colonel of the 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry in the American Civil War. He was a veteran of the Mexican–American War. He was killed in the Battle of Gaines's Mill on June 27, 1862, and is buried in Allegheny Cemetery.[1][2] See also Hays Street and Rippey Street.
