This alley was laid out as Spruce Alley in 1835 in a plan of lots by O. O. Gregg.[1]
The South Side was annexed by the city of Pittsburgh in 1872.[2] This caused many duplications of street names, which were fixed by a city ordinance in 1881. Spruce Alley on the South Side conflicted with another alley in Lower Lawrenceville and the Strip District (today Spruce Way), so it was renamed Selby Alley.[3]
It became Selby Way in 1914 when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
