Rebecca Street (until 1910) | |
Origin of name | Daughter of General William Robinson, Jr. |
This street appears as Rebecca Street in the 1830 map of Jean Barbeau and Lewis Keyon.[1] Gilbert Love, citing notes written by James S. West in 1885, says that Rebecca Street was named after one of the daughters of General William Robinson, Jr., an early citizen of Allegheny and the eponym of General Robinson Street.[2] By 1852 Rebecca Street had been extended westward all the way to Water Lane (today Western Avenue) near its intersection with Ferry Lane (today Beaver Avenue).[3]
In 1910, three years after the annexation of Allegheny by the city of Pittsburgh, over 900 streets were renamed to fix duplicates, and Rebecca Street became Reedsdale Street.[4]
