This road was laid out in 1839.[1] It appears in the 1851 map of Allegheny County by Sidney & Neff and S. McRea.[2] The 1862 map by S. N. and F. W. Beers also shows the road and labels the community of West Liberty through which it passed.[3] West Liberty was incorporated as a borough in 1876.[4][5]
The road was originally called the Pittsburgh and Washington Road.[6][5] It is labeled West Liberty Road in the 1896 Hopkins atlas.[7]
West Liberty was annexed to the city of Pittsburgh in 1908, by which time the thoroughfare had become known as West Liberty Avenue.[8]
