This street was originally named Mary Street[1] or Mary Avenue.[2] It was changed to Milton Street by a city ordinance in 1881[1] to fix the duplication with Mary Street in the South Side, and that name was confirmed by another ordinance in 1910.[3] It has occasionally been called Milton Avenue.[4][5] Current street signs say Milton Street.
Bob Regan includes "Milton" in a list of streets named for noted historical people;[6] the implied eponym seems to be John Milton (1608–1674), British poet.
