Jackson Street (until 1910)
Jarvella Street (1910–1916)
Jackson Street North (1916–1925)

This street appears as Jackson Street in the 1830 map of Jean Barbeau and Lewis Keyon and later maps from the nineteenth century.[1][2][3][4]

In 1910, three years after the annexation of Allegheny City, over 900 streets were renamed to fix duplicates. Jackson Street was renamed Jarvella Street to avoid confusion with Jackson Street in Highland Park.[5] The origin of the name Jarvella is mysterious, except that it begins with the same letter as Jackson (a common pattern in street renamings). In a 1916 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette column, George T. Fleming derisively and sarcastically wrote, "In the Buena Vista plan of the North Side we have now Jarvella street as the northern boundary and delightfully reminiscent (?) of the eternal fitness of things that permeates, adorns, characterizes, afflicts Pittsburgh's street nomenclature."[6]

In 1916 the name Jackson was returned: the street was renamed Jackson Street North.[7] In 1925 it was renamed again, becoming Jacksonia Street.[8]

The name Jackson Street, having been bestowed no later than 1830, cannot come from the Mexican–American War like many other streets in the Mexican War Streets district.
