The name of this alley was established as Indiana Alley by a city ordinance in 1881.[1] The 1882 Hopkins atlas shows the alley, unlabeled, perpendicular to Michigan Avenue (today part of Mayflower Street).[2] It became Indiana Way in 1914 when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[3]
The alley is named for the state of Indiana.[4]
