This street was laid out as Fillmore Street in 1851 in a plan of lots by Edward Dithridge and Henry Reis.[1] It was named for Millard Fillmore (1800–1874), 13th President of the United States (1850–1853).[2][3]
The street name was originally spelled Fillmore, with two L's, as the president's name is spelled.[1][4] This spelling was officially established by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1881.[5] In 1910, another ordinance that established the names of all streets in Pittsburgh listed this street as Filmore Street, with one L.[6] This ordinance did not indicate that it was changing the name,[6] nor was this street listed in the previous ordinance, which made over 900 changes to street names,[7] so it is likely that this was an inadvertent misspelling. Nevertheless, the spelling Filmore has never been corrected, and current street signs say "Filmore St."
