This alley was laid out as Ethel Way in 1898 by J. J. Booth.[1] It was renamed Etude Way in 1914.[2]
In a 1989 Post-Gazette editorial, Etude Way was used as an example of a name "even longtime residents of neighborhoods didn't know about" that was brought to light by the installation of street signs throughout the city.[3]
