Choate Alley (until 1914) |
This alley was first laid out in 1865 in a plan of lots for Samuel W. Vandergrift.[1] Surrounding plans of lots, laid out through 1872, extended the alley both east and west.[2][3][4][5] However, none of these plans gave the alley a name.
The name was officially established as Choate Street (not Alley) by a city ordinance in 1881.[6] Its status as a street seems to have been confirmed by another ordinance in 1910, establishing the names of all streets in Pittsburgh, which listed it as just "Choate" (implying that it was a street).[7]
However, all ordinances in the 1880s and 1890s relating to the location, establishment of grade, grading, paving, curbing, and opening of the alley call it Choate Alley.[8][9][10][11][12][13][14] Assuming that it was named Choate Alley, it became Choate Way in 1914 when an ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[15] All current street signs say Choate Way.
