Costume Alley (1881–1914)

This alley formerly ran northeast from Carson Street, parallel to and just southeast of what is now Hot Metal Street. It was laid out as Centre Alley in 1866 in a plan of lots by Thomas McClurg, so named because it ran through the center of the plan.[1]

After Pittsburgh annexed the South Side in 1872,[2] this name conflicted with Centre Avenue. Many streets and alleys were renamed in 1881 to fix duplicates; this alley was renamed Costume Alley.[3] It became Costume Way in 1914 when an ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]

Costume Way was vacated in 1950.[5]

In a 1998 Post-Gazette article, Torsten Ove included Costume Way in a list of Pittsburgh alleys with "bizarre names."[6]
