This alley was originally named Cedar Alley. In 1881 a city ordinance renamed many streets to fix duplicates; Cedar Alley conflicted with Cedar Street in Bloomfield (today Cedarville Street), so it was changed to Cotton Alley.[1] The ordinance actually renamed it Colton Alley because of a typo, though it was called Cotton Alley elsewhere in the ordinance.[1] In any case, the name was officially re-established as Cotton Alley by another ordinance in 1910.[2]
It became Cotton Way in 1914 when an ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[3]
