This alley was originally named Bates Alley. In 1881 a city ordinance renamed many streets to fix duplicates; Bates Alley conflicted with Bates Street in Oakland, so it was changed to Banner Alley.[1] It became Banner Way in 1914 when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[2]
