Beech Alley formerly ran in a roughly east–west direction through what are now the Islands and Jungle Odyssey exhibits of the Pittsburgh Zoo. It was laid out in 1870 in C. B. Seely's plan of lots.[1] By 1890, the lots on either side of Beech Alley had been sold to many people,[2] but in that year the City of Pittsburgh began to buy up land to expand Highland Park,[3] and by 1899 the city owned all land on both sides of the alley.[4] By 1904 Beech Alley and the nearby streets had disappeared, absorbed into Highland Park.[5]
